Episode Summary

In this episode we feature a webinar "teach-in", held on October 6, 2026, on the Alberta referendum.

Episode Notes

With introductory remarks from Dr. Cora Voyageur, Professor of Sociology at the University of Calgary and a member of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, regarding the idea for this 'teach-in' webinar on the Alberta referendum, the webinar proceeds with five featured speakers: Chief Allan Adam, Chief of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation in Northern Alberta; Dorothy Voyageur, an Elder with the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation and campaign manager for the referendum; Dr. Alex Bierman, Professor of Sociology; Dr. Michael Adorjan, Professor of Sociology, and Dr. Pablo Policzer, Associate Professor, Department of Political Science.

Featured speakers speak for roughly 10 minutes each, on topics related to the Alberta referendum, including: perceptions from and impacts upon First Nations peoples, critical engagement with the referendum survey questions, moral panics and narrative mediating referendum debates, especially on social media; and socioeconomic implications of the referendum with a focus on weak institutions, rentier state dynamics and democratic erosion.

A short question and answer period follows after the speakers have presented.
